Off the Checklist: Sewing Machine

After a few years of procrastination and budget constraints, I was finally able to cross an item off my current checklist: buy a sewing machine, so I can catch up on my sewing projects! It seemed that all I really needed was a push to get myself one–I needed a creative outlet badly, and getting a sewing machine was a good start for this goal. So, everyone, meet my old-new sewing buddy, a second hand high-speed Juki Flora 5000:

Front view

It can do several stitches, 19, I think! Not bad for a first sewing machine!

Above: stitch size setting; Below: speed control (slowest to the left and fastest to the right)

Comes with a variety of presser foot attachments for every stitch type.

This portion can be detached to reveal the bobbin area and to allow sewing of sleeves and such

Thread spool holder

The cover has a nifty side compartment for storing spare needles, thread, scissors, etc.

Okay, Yuki the Juki (sorry, I just named her! XD) wasn’t really my first choice when I looked around at the Port Area (Pier) for my first sewing machine. I was eyeing a pink Brother Compal Ace model, as for some reason, I wanted a pink one. But it was well above my budget of Php 2000-2500, and the next best was Yuki the Juki, priced well within my budget. She looked me in the eye and said, “I can do a good job, and I look nice too, so why don’t you take me home instead?”

I had a little trouble with her after Mom and I threaded her incorrectly, causing some threads to tangle underneath the feed dog/throat plate. Good thing she came with a 1-year warranty and Mom had the time to take her back to the store for some fixing. Now, she’s good to go, and I had a bit of orientation c/o my Mom, who is more familiar with sewing machines and understood the technician’s instructions better. I’m excited to embark on various sewing project with this nifty baby!

P.S. Special thanks to Ms. Jonette for giving me the tip on where to get nice sewing machines for cheap!

    • It’s just past the Port Area gate next to the old BIR Building (Anda Circle, Intramuros). You won’t miss it, you’ll see right away the row of stores selling second-hand sewing machines just past that gate. Good luck!

  1. hi. may i know where you got this baby and how much? i’ve been dying to own a sewing machine since the day that my granny’s machine broke ;( but budget is tight as well. if you got her with less than 3k, i want one too. please let me know… thanks much.

  2. I too have a flora 5000 at home.. it’s great… is there any way you could send me the user manual… cos i can’t read the letters on it… it wd be great…

    • Hello dhanuja! Unfortunately it didn’t come with the manual so I operate it pretty much on the basic level only. I don’t even remember how to use the presser foot attachments anymore!

  3. Complete sewing feet — the Holy Grail of sewing machines. She’s gorgeous! I’m glad you love her. Here’s to many happy sewing adventures! *salute*

    PS: You’ve quite welcome. :)

    • I’m glad you find her gorgeous too! Mom and I have been sewing with her these past weekends, and even my mom is smitten with Yuki the Juki! I’ve made a couple of stuff with her, and I’m planning to make more so I can finally show off what I’ve been up to in a separate blog post!
